Gospel Jam Etiquette and Guidelines
Mistakes are o.k. Be tolerant. Encourage & help fellow musicians.
If you get off beat just stop, look, listen. Then jump back in.
Everyone gets a chance to solo - if not in every song then at least in every set for at least one verse. No grandstanding solos please. Don’t play over soloists. (play softer)
Too many guitar players all playing the same chord sounds weird. Improvise !!!
Don’t solo unless it’s your turn to solo. If you're not ready just shake your head to pass. Leader should nod to signal end of song.
Everyone gets a chance to pick a song.
Play simple songs that everyone can play.
Don’t make it hard.
Tune up at home. If you have a capo & music stand …bring 'em.
“Organized road jams” require a commitment of at least 4 players (regulars) to be scheduled.
If you have a new song, please bring 6 copies with words and chords. All songs should fit on one page, readable with print.
Preferably 3-hole punched.
We are primarily an acoustic jam. (Except for bass/keyboard).
Don’t be offended if the leader asks that you turn down.
Our jams are audience participation jams. Bring someone! Everyone is welcome! Come! Listen! Join in!
Jams are fun. They are not practice. If it isn’t fun,
don’t do it.
No soap boxing (preaching), let the music do that job.
